Some say it's the most beautiful car ever built, others know it as Ferrari's main competition in the World Sportscar Championship stage during the mid-50s.

The Maserati 300S was a racing car produced between 1955 and 1958, designed as a successor to the Maserati 250S. It featured a 3.0-liter inline-six engine capable of producing around 250 horsepower.

Chassis 3070, completed on February 23, 1957, was one of only twenty-six units produced during its production run.

Factory and Early History

Chassis 3070 was originally built as a factory team race car and was among the very few to receive the 450S brake conversion upgrade. It was also the second 300S to be given the "long nose" body style by the factory. The car was finished in Maserati Corsa red and was initially ordered by Italian Primo Pezzoli of Scuderia Guastalla, a prominent racing team in Europe and South America. Team drivers included Juan-Manuel Fangio, Sir Stirling Moss, Jean Behra, and Carlos Menditeguy.

Racing Career

Chassis 3070, along with its sister vehicles 3067 and 3069, had an active racing career, initially competing under the Scuderia Guastalla banner. This vehicle (#3070) received the brake upgrade from Maserati in 1958, likely in preparation for endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Team Scuderia Guastalla featured several famous drivers from that era, supporting the likelihood that 3070 was piloted by one or many of its legendary driver lineup.

Lineage

1957 - Primo Pezzoli, Leffe, Italy. Pezzoli, team owner of Scuderia Guastalla, managed a prominent racing team in Europe and South America with drivers such as Juan-Manuel Fangio, Sir Stirling Moss, Jean Behra, and Carlos Menditeguy.

1958 - Scuderia Guastalla, Milano, Racing Team.

1980 - Conte Vittorio Zanon, also known as Count Vittorio Zanon di Valgiurata, was a notable Italian car collector and a prominent figure in the classic car community. Born into a wealthy family of Venetian bankers who moved to Turin in the late 19th century, he became a significant player in the Italian automotive scene. He was known for his extensive and impressive collection of classic cars, including rare and historic automobiles.

Zanon's collection included notable vehicles such as a Lancia Astura by Pininfarina and a Ferrari 375 MM Spider. Interestingly, he also owned chassis #3069, another long-nose 300S delivered to Fangio’s manager Marcello Giambertone and temporarily raced under Scuderia Madunina with Juan Manuel Fangio behind the wheel. Zanon's passion for cars extended beyond collecting; he was a financial backer for Italian Grand Prix driver Michele Alboreto and served as the president of the Automotoclub Storico Italia (ASI), solidifying his influence and dedication to preserving automotive history. Zanon passed away shortly before completing the restoration of 3070.

1997 - Acquired by Dr. Wolf Zweifler of Munich.

1999 - Dr. Wolf Zweifler of Munich contracted Steve Hart, UK, to complete the restoration, which was finished in 2001 with a new body made in the UK.

2001 - Restoration completed in England.

2005 - #3070 was involved in a racing-related accident.

2006 - Sold in need of rehabilitation.

2007 to present - Current ownership.

2008 - A Maserati factory original 300S body (originally sourced in the 1980s) from collector Dr. Mallari of Turin, Italy, was reunited with 3070.

2010 - Fully documented restoration/body reunion completed by Redline Restorations, USA.
